Shanghai : A Muslim-Friendly City to Visit
Islam in China has existed for about 1,400 years ago, though Muslims are minority group in China, There are estimated of 70,000 Muslims living in Shanghai, a city of over 25 million population.
Travelling to one of its bustling city of Shanghai has much to offer for travellers around the world. Shanghai is a picturesque metropolitan city with towering skyscrapers, impressive architecture of modern and traditional influenced, to historic temples and beautiful gardens.
Shanghai has 7 mosques with Songjiang Mosque as the oldest building and one of the popular Shanghai mosques is Huxi Mosque due to its famous Friday Muslim market. The stalls sell halal street food where you can savour scrumptious food like dumplings, meat buns, noodles and lamb skewers. There will always halal eateries around mosques, so do not worry for halal food.
Shanghai Disneyland is one of tourist attractions for families that you can enjoy its famous rides such as TRON Lightcycle Power Run, Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan’s Flight. Although there is no halal restaurant inside Disneyland, but there is one halal restaurant in Disneytown outside the theme park. Yershan Restaurant is inside a food court and it serves Chinese-Uighur food at pretty reasonable prices.
Another famous landmark is The Bund, a waterfront area in central Shanghai along the Huangpu River. This is definitely a tourist hotspot and what better way to enjoy the spectacular view with Huang Pu River cruise, even better at night. The view is amazing with its colonial buildings, architectures, skyscrapers, and Shanghai iconic The Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
Nanjing Road is a shopping street stretching to almost 5km with fashion retail shops, malls, eateries and restaurants. There are Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Theatre and exhibition hall if you opt to try less commercialised attractions. The distance between Nanjing Road and The Bund is 1 km and you can find halal food such as Hongchangxing Restaurant and Qingmeiju Muslim Restaurant.
If you appreciate a classic Chinese style garden, then Yuyuan Garden is a go-to place. It was built during Ming Dynasty and you will value the beautiful garden with its appreciation to history and architecture. Around the area, there are plenty of affordable cafes, arts and crafts shops for souvenir.
Shanghai is a Muslim friendly city where travellers shall have the ease of mind with halal food and prayer area while visiting attractions. Other halal restaurants to name a few are Xing Qing Hong along Jian Zhong road, Uighur Restaurant, Efes Turkish Restaurant, Qian Wei Ramen in front of Radison Blu hotel in Pudong and Guan Guan Ji near Fuyou Mosque.
All you need to do is a little research and plan your itinerary.
