Chinese New Year (CNY) is just around the corner. Despite that we are still under movement control order (MCO), we can still celebrate with our friends, colleagues and neighbours as long as it is in line with the Islamic values.
For Chinese Muslims, celebrating CNY is part of their ethnic identities which they are born with and proud of their cultures and customs.
For non-Chinese Muslims, this festival can still be rejoiced by attending CNY events to strengthen our ties with our Chinese friends and colleagues.
Islam is a beautiful religion that celebrates diversity in cultures as long as it is not contradicting in the teaching of Islam. As Malaysians, we have multi-cultural races and some are lucky to have interracial marriages family to welcome and to learn each other cultures.
Would it be fitting for a Muslim to visit friends and families during CNY?
We Muslims are encouraged to visit our relatives and neighbours to strengthen family bonds and community togetherness. However, amidst Covid-19 pandemic, we are but to choose meeting online via Zoom and the like, just like we celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri last year.
Perhaps we can organise festive online session since we had the prior experience and why not cheer them up with the virtual celebration. Wear red to embrace the Chinese colour that associates with good luck and prosper in Chinese cultures.
We may also send gifts to our Chinese friends and neighbours to mark this special day. Nowadays, the gifts are plentiful to be chosen online even for halal food and deliver the wonderful gifts to them. You can choose from pineapple tarts, ondeh tarts and cookies, or the healthy basket of bird’s nest that nourish the body and improve appetites to the classic oranges in a basket or premium tea gifts. Who does not delight to receive presents? Everybody loves it 😊
You can even order Bak Kwa, a delicacy made of dry meat from halal Chinese butchers. A range of hampers also available filled with chocolates and sparkling water and biscuits that cater for halal hamper supplies. In this day and age, digital transactions are more convenience and globally accepted. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking so many possible good choices via online marketplace or shopping online.
Let us show to the world that despite we have different belief or religion, we can still respect and embrace each other’s way of life. We can live together harmoniously while practising our respective lifestyles.
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
And Allah knows best.
